Creating Your Own Quiet Space at Home
Our home is meant to be a sanctuary from the outside world. Yet so often, it ends up feeling like another to-do list: chores to complete, people to care for, endless tasks waiting.
That’s why it’s so important to carve out a space that’s just for you—a place to truly rest and recharge. In this post, I’ll walk you through the mindset shifts and some practical tips for creating your own quiet space at home.
Step 1: Shift Your Mindset
You might feel like you need to finish the dishes, tidy the toys, or throw in a load of laundry before you can rest. Or maybe you find yourself justifying why you “deserve” rest: It’s because I had a long week… I saw so many clients… the baby woke up early.
But here’s the truth: you don’t need to earn rest, and you don’t need to justify it.
Rest is a right, not a reward.
If your body tells you it needs rest, listen. Because if you don’t, you won’t have the energy for anything—not even the things you actually enjoy.
Of course, this shift isn’t easy. Many of us were taught to see rest as lazy, so it’s natural to feel guilty about it. But becoming aware of those thoughts—and actively challenging them—is the first step. Without this mindset work, it’s hard to truly relax in any quiet space.
Step 2: Choose Your Space
Next, it’s time to pick a location. Ideally, it’s somewhere calm, relaxing, and welcoming.
For me, it’s my bedroom.
For my husband, it’s his gaming room.
For you, it could be a cozy corner of the couch.
If you have children, a room with a door is ideal to create a sense of separation. But even if your space is shared, you can still carve out a spot that’s just yours.
Step 3: Declutter Before You Add
Often we think we need to decorate to make a space feel special. But in reality, the most impactful step is decluttering.
Remove stressors and visual clutter so your space feels light and inviting. That might mean:
Keeping your side of the bedroom tidy
Clearing off the bed so it’s easy to lie down
Creating a toy-free corner in the living room
Decoration isn’t necessary. You don’t need to buy anything new. Simply clearing the space is enough to make it restful.
Step 4: Set Boundaries with Technology
This one is hard, but so worth it: limit technology in your quiet space.
I know from experience that doomscrolling doesn’t leave me feeling restored—it leaves me drained. Having clear boundaries around phone use in your space makes a huge difference.
Step 5: Bring in Light
If possible, choose a spot with natural light. A view of nature is ideal, but even just opening the blinds can shift the energy in the space and help you feel more grounded.
Step 6: Tend to Your Space
Think of caring for your quiet space as an act of self-care in itself.
Each morning, I:
Make my bed (just a simple comforter on top)
Open the blinds
Do a quick declutter
That way, whenever I need to retreat, my space already feels calm and ready.
Step 7: Communicate with Your Partner
If you’re a parent, you may not always have the luxury of slipping away. That’s why it helps to have a clear agreement with your partner.
In my home, we use a simple “tag in, tag out” approach. When one of us needs rest, we just say: “I need 20.” No questions asked—the other steps in, and the person who needs time takes it.
This only works because we’ve had the conversation ahead of time. Open communication is key.
And if you’re a single parent, or your partner isn’t often available, creating a designated space is still valuable. When your child naps or goes to bed, you’ll have a spot waiting that’s just for you, instead of being swallowed up by chores.
Final Thoughts
Creating a quiet space at home isn’t about making it picture-perfect—it’s about making it yours. With the right mindset and a few simple steps, you can give yourself permission to rest and actually have a space that supports that.
